failure...ruh roh
I am outing myself as an uber fan of Grey's Anatomy. And, I love the voiceovers Meredith does in the opening and closing of the episodes because the imagery and metaphoric proses just get me every time. In the the Man on the Moon & Stand Up episodes, the monologues are so awesome and I instantly connect them to the mindsets of design thinking and well the chosen field of an educator. I titled this blog "failure...ruh roh" because well, failure is still considered a bad thing for many. A great amount of my most meaningful & lasting learning I've learned through failure, through defeat, through tears, through Charlie Brown's sad walk, etc. As a design thinker, a failure is not a dead end. It's an intersection, a crossroad, or better yet an opportunity to try, try again. Yes, this is so pollyanna and well, a lot of the time I might sound like this with DEEPdt but with people & empathy there is never failure instead opportunities & possibilities. How could anyone ever say otherwise? I hope you enjoy the two monologues below as much as I do... I am so thankful for these nuggets that add depth to my frame of reference and well, help me grow.
"Every doctor has a dirty little secret. We're all competitive science geeks. In grade school, we made the biggest and best volcanoes, which erupted actual fake molten lava. In junior high, we spent hours laboring over our rat mazes. So that one day, we'd be the person who changed the face of medicine forever...
Sometimes, the key to making progress is to recognize how to take that very first step. Then you start your journey. You hope for the best and you stick with it, day in, day out. Even if you're tired, even if you want to walk away, you don't. Because you are a pioneer. But nobody ever said it'd be easy." Meredith Grey (Man on the Moon)
"Failure is inevitable. Every scientist was told no over and over. The ones we remember, the ones who changed our lives, the Curies, the Salks, the Barnards. They’re the ones who wouldn’t take no for an answer... … Failure is inevitable, unavoidable but failure should never get the last word. You have to hold on to what you want. You have to not take no for an answer and take what’s coming to you. Never give in, never give up. Stand up. Stand up and take it." Meredith Grey (Stand Up)
